Jennifer SylvaJennifer Burke Sylva focuses her practice on entertainment, intellectual property, and copyright law and serves clients in the music industry, the technology sector, artists and arts organizations. Jennifer represents individuals and companies in matters that include the creation of works, the protection and licensing of rights, composing and studio agreements for songwriters and musicians, management, touring, music production, book and music publishing, and other transactions related to the Internet, multimedia, software applications, and emerging technologies. Jennifer also advises clients in preparation of the launch of new businesses, such as SaaS and cloud-based businesses, "marketplace" or platform businesses, user-generated content, and mobile applications.

 

Prior to founding the Sylva Law firm in 2006, Jennifer served as head counsel for Sony's online digital distribution venture, Sony Connect, Inc. Her responsibilities included providing all legal support for the launch of its consumer-facing business including obtaining rights from technology companies, major and independent record labels, publishers, and for film and tv programs. Jennifer provided legal guidance to multiple business units within the Sony family of companies and was the main point of contact on legal matters supporting the expansion of the business into Europe and Japan. Prior to her time with Sony, Jennifer worked as General Corporate Counsel for Redwood City-based Liquid Audio, Inc. and was employed in private practice.

 

Jennifer publishes articles periodically and educates others on topics related to intellectual property and music law. Jennifer was awarded the First Place Nathan Burkan Memorial Writing Award by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), earned the High Technology Law Certificate, was selected to serve as an articles editor for the High Technology Law Journal, published two articles, and received the Probono Award for her service to California Lawyers for the Arts while at Santa Clara University School of Law. Prior to law school, Jennifer worked for a full service box office, as a radio DJ and instructor of broadcasting, and for Virgin Records in London, England and Dublin, Ireland.
